Keto vs Fasting Mimicking Diet

When it comes to losing weight and burning fat, both the keto diet and the Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD) have been shown to deliver impressive results at a high success rate. However, each takes a unique path towards achieving these desired goals, leading to different long-term outcomes. Here’s a closer look at the two popular diets, and how they stack up against one another.

The Ketogenic (Keto) Diet

Low carb, moderate protein, and high-fat. That’s the macronutrient formula the keto diet uses to achieve the goal of getting your body into the metabolic state of ketosis, where it burns fat instead of carbs for energy. By consuming less carbs, it’s easier for the body to access and burn its fat stores, making it a very effective method for quick weight loss and fat reduction. With the Keto Diet, when and how much you eat is less important than sticking to the low carb/high-fat formula. Due to unpleasant side effects like the keto flu—a feeling of sickness and fatigue when entering ketosis—many often quit before seeing any benefits. And because most health experts do not recommend the keto diet for the long-term diet (beyond 90 days), a high percentage of people tend to regain much of the weight they lost once they return to eating carbs.

The Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD)

Similar to the Keto Diet, burning excess fat and losing weight is a result quickly achieved with the FMD. It does so however, by significantly reducing caloric intake during a fasting period where specific foods in precise amounts are provided daily to nourish the body, while keeping it in a fasted state. Because the FMD is a prolonged fast that lasts for 5 days, the health effects extend far beyond weight loss and fat burning. Scientific studies have shown that in addition to helping maintain metabolic health, the FMD stimulates autophagy (cellular clean up and repair) as well as triggers a proliferation of stem cells throughout the body. And, unlike the keto diet that allows for an abundance of high-fat meat and dairy products, ProLon is a plant-based meal plan that provides healthy fats and macro and micronutrients to fuel your body throughout the fast, helping you to retain lean body mass.
